Queen Rearing Classes

There will be two classes this Spring.

Both classes are $75. The June 5th class will be at the Heller Nature Center in Highland Park. The class will be from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm and lunch will be provided.

The June 19th class will be at the Jarrett Center at the Byron forest preserve in Byron. The class will be from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm and lunch will be provided.

The agenda for both classes will consist of the following:

  • Bee breeding and genetics
  • Nutrition and pre-queen rearing needs.
  • Equipment overview
  • Setting up cell starters, cell finisher and one box starter/finishers (hands on)
  • Making wax cell cups (hands on)
  • The Nicot non-grafting system
  • Grafting (hands on)
  • Handling queen cells and queens (hands on)

Class members will leave with a grafting tool, cell bar and cups to be able to start when they return home.

If conditions are good each member should get a live queen cell to take home also.
