Year-round monthly beekeeping workshop led by Jeff Ludwig and various instructors. In-season classes are held in the apiary of the forest preserve where participants can work with live bees in working hives.

2018 dates:

  • January 14: Checking for winter kill and clean up of dead equipment.
  • February 11: Equipment needs and assembly of new equipment. Also, why didn't my bees survive the winter?
  • March 11: Feeding bees and installing packaged bees.
  • April 8: Feeding bees and preparing for splitting over-wintered colonies.
  • May 20*: Knowing when to put on supers, swarm prevention, and raising queens.
  • June 10*: Honey extraction how-to and uses for beeswax.
  • July 8*: Marketing strategies and health department updates.
  • August 12*: Checking for mites and overall bee colony health.
  • September 9*: Getting bees ready for over-wintering.
  • October 14*: Over-wintering review for healthy bees and checking mite load.
  • November 18: Cleaning equipment and assembly of new equipment.
  • December 9: Christmas party for beekeepers, honey tasting, honey recipe samples, wassail, door prizes, and lots of bee talk about ordering packaged bees for spring shipment.
